摘要

The two-stroke engine's simplicity of design and ability to produce unrivaled raw power on a variety of scales makes it an engineering feat to be explored, scrutinized, and admired. However, the two-stroke is often overlooked, uncelebrated, and, in some applications, vilified. A gross polluter, this revolutionary motor is often targeted for phase-out in favor of more environmentally friendly four-stroke engines and/or those that run on electricity. That said, designers and engineers are steadily working to revive the two-stroke. They aspire to create a modified, fuel-efficient engine that meets environmental regulations. Students can develop technological literacy though an investigation of the pros and cons, alternatives, and current developments of the two-stroke engine through hands-on applied learning.
