There is no set way to get students to take elective courses in a particular department. However, there are methods that a teacher can try in order to build his or her enrollment. First, it is important for teachers to keep classes fun. If these teachers are unable to keep the current students coming back, then the other promotion tools will be of little or no help. Teachers shoulc create design challenges and other meaningful learning experiences to help students learn and to put them on the pathway to becoming lifelong learners. Next, teachers must be sure they are advertising all the great things that are happening in their classroom through the use of bulletin boards, articles in the school and local newspaper, presentations at Back to School Night and Parent Teacher Association meetings, and by being involved in other school-wide programs and events where they can showcase their classes and their students. "You should try to tell your story as often, in as many different ways, to as many different people as your energy and ingenuity permit" (Dennisor 1968, p. 40). It is important for teachers to make sure everyone knows about their classes and what their students are doing. Teachers need to engage students, other educators, school administrators, guidance counselors, and the community as a whole, because it is the positive word of mouth that spreads that will help to get their message out. After all, "there is little danger that the public will be reminded too often of what the (technology education) program is doing and how it is affecting the youth who come under its influence" (Carver, 1950, p. 335). If a teacher continues to promote his or her classes using these suggestions and the example above, and keeps trying to get his/ her message out, then over time the enrollment numbers will grow.
