Today we dispose of our garbage in landfills, great piles of human trash that slowly decompose. Some companies have tried drilling into landfills to collect the methane gas accumulating there, and then burning it to make electricity or as a boiler fuel. Because the consistency of garbage is so non-uniform, it makes it terribly difficult to know how much gas is going to be generated at any time. If making methane gas is important, why not design a landfill that can do it efficiently?
