Understanding and Writing G & M Code for CNC Machines

摘要

The benefits of using CNC to manufacture parts include improved quality control, versatility, repeatability, increased production, elimination of expensive jigs, easy inch-to-metric conversions, increased machining capabilities, editing of programs, tool offset, communication with two- and threedimensional modeling programs, and increased machine flexibility (Nhadi, 2000, Walker, 2004). These benefits have resulted in increased use of CNC in manufacturing and increased hiring of skilled technicians to program and operate this equipment. This G & M Code activity meets national standards and helps students link their mathematics content to the applied projects they work on in technology and engineering labs. Whether computer-aided drafting, robotics, machining, or design, technology students benefit from understanding and utilizing procedural and conceptual mathematics to solve problems. That understanding and use of mathematics in an authentic project can help prepare students for their future STEM-based careers.
