摘要

For the past two decades, and recently with the economic recession, the media has emphasized the decline of manufacturing in the United States and other developed countries. In the U.S., some initially blamed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for this decline. People have certainly seen news accounts of layoffs in manufacturing or perhaps have been personally affected by them. Sometimes there seem to be contradictions in the news. People hear about the acute decline in manufacturing jobs, but just a few years ago China had not yet overtaken the U.S. in industrial output. What is the current status of manufacturing in the U.S.? Is manufacturing an important part of the economy anymore? Should it be studied, and should students prepare to work in the manufacturing sector?
