Using 3-D printing to make toys, iPhone covers, and jewelry is exciting hobbyists, but much of the technology's impact could be felt at a much smaller scale. Printing tiny structures with features a few hundred nanometers in size looks like a promising way to make heart stents, microneedles for painless shots, and scaffolds for growing cells and tissue. Now a company called Nanoscribe, a spinoff from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, has developed a tabletop 3-D microprinter that can create complicated microstructures 100 times faster than is possible today.
