India faces an enormous challenge in providing its citizens with clean potable water free from patho-genic bacteria, viruses, and cysts which cause diseases such as diarrhea, chol-era, typhoid, and amoebiasis. It is esti-mated that about 10 million illnesses and 700,000 deaths in India could be attrib-uted to diarrhea of which 400,000 are children under the age of five. Moreover, due to over exploitation of ground water, the levels of mineral contaminants such as arsenic and fluoride in water drawn from wells have increased dramatically.
