Most parts of the world may be facing an economic slow down. But the world's two most populous countries, China and India, are galloping ahead economically. The modern economy's growth on steroids is actually powered by the availability of cheap energy and both these giants have been scouting the world for cheap energy sources. The planners of India and China can now relax. MIT Professor Daniel Nocera has unveiled what is probably one of the most important developments in the field of energy. Nocera, who delivered the keynote speech at the 3rd EmTech India conference in Bangalore on March 22, chose the occasion to share the details of his paper submitted to Science journal. In this paper, Nocera had outlined the breakthrough method developed at MIT to recreate the photosynthesis done by a green leaf in a laboratory using artificial leaf. Noc-era's research group at MIT has had initial success with the artificial leaf made out of silicon and coated with cadmium, nickel, and some proprietary chemicals. This leaf, which will act like a fuel cell, he told the excited audience at EmTech India, can split hydrogen and oxygen in a glass of water at room temperature and it would be possible to extract energy at the local level.
