At present there are several digital service providers in India, namely TataSky, Reliance, Airtel Digital, Dish offering their Direct to Home (DTH) services. To avail their services you need to buy a the unique set top box (STB) that these service providers offer-with some sort of monthly plan. This means you will have to stick to just one operator once you brought his solution, else you need to invest money again on the new hardware. But what if you can change from TataSky to Airtel DTH with the same hardware. Yes, we are talking about interoperable STBs. For this, there is critical need for augmenting the Internet with a purpose built "Content Delivery Network"-one which will not get suffocated with users accessing HDTV quality videos simultaneously. A new layer called HDTV Internet will emerge over the existing Internet. The ubiquitous HDTV will finally connect each home in the world over the iCDN.
