We got our hands on a preview unit of the Sony Ericsson W980i Walkman phone. Expected to hit the markets very soon, the W980i is a stylish, dual-display clamshell phone with a completely glossy front and a matte finish on the back. With the flip closed, the front display and capacitive media are active. The touch sensitive keys light up in the trademark Walkman orange and can be used to navigate the music player or FM. The shapes around the keys look a bit weird, but they actually guide your fingers to the keys. What's new and interesting in the design department is the transparent strip on the bottom that you can see when the flip is closed. It glows orange when the device is playing music or white when in a call. This little design flourish adds extra oomph factor to the device. The phone has a bright internal display, but the glossy interior is a finger print magnet. The speakers of this device are amongst the loudest that I have heard on a mobile phone; though at max levels there is some distortion.
