Telecom Italia and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, owner of Mexican incumbent Telmex, have reportedly joined the list of potential suitors for Deutsche Telekom's subsidiaryYa.com, alongside two of the country's mobile operators, Vodafone and Orange. Alternative carrier Jazztel, meanwhile, could be a buyer but is also thought to be a potential takeover target itself. Both TI and Slim would be newcomers to the Spanish market, whereas their rivals could combine Ya.com with their existing local operations, either mobile or fixed. Interestingly, Deutsche Telekom originally purchased Ya.com from Jazztel, now thought as a potential acquirer, back in 2000 (TM, 12 Sep. 2000). Jazztel is also rumoured to be in talks with Vodafone, which is seeking partnerships with fixed operators across Europe. However, Vodafone might prefer to buy Ya.com outright and assume management control rather than negotiate a partnership agreement.
