Cable could see a resurgence in Norway's broadband and triple-play market, as the country's two leading operators prepare to launch wideband services early next year. Canal Digital and GET are both upgrading their networks using Cisco Docsis 3.0 equipment to support broadband speeds far in excess of those possible over the copper infrastructure of Telenor, the incumbent. "The biggest benefit of the cable is that we can provide simultaneously a lot of TV channels and high throughput of IP, and that is the biggest challenge for DSL, because they would have to use limited IP for both internet and TV services," says Thomas-Andre Larsen, system manager for internet at Canal Digital. "With 3.0, [cable] will definitely be the leading broadband solution compared to DSL." Cable's position in Norway could be further strengthened by Telenor's lack of firm plans to upgrade its broadband-access network using fibre. The incumbent is conducting fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) and -home (FTTH) trials but has made no official commitment to either (TM, 17 Oct, 2007).
