Belgium's Voo consortium has agreed to buy eight of the country's cable operators for about €464.5 million in a bid to corner the triple-play market in the southern half of Belgium. Analysts expect the group to further establish cable as a major threat to Belgacom in a market where DSL already accounts for less than two-thirds of broadband subscriptions. The deal is likely to be a disappointment to Telenet, Belgium's largest cable operator, however, which had previously tried to buy the eight companies. Cable operators Brutele of Brussels and ALE-Teledis of Belgium's second-largest city, Liege, began offering triple-play services under the Voo brand in April. The purchase of the eight networks from municipalities and utility Electrabel will give the operation control over all the cable infrastructure in the Wallonia region.
