The deployment of fibre in the access network (FTTx) in France and the Netherlands will result in modest changes to broadband competition, according to new research from Idate. The research firm's DigiWorld2007 Yearbook predicts that the broadband market share of FTTx in France will remain well below 10% until 2010, despite large-scale deployments by incumbent France Telecom and rival Iliad. Idate expects France to have 1.3 million FTTx subscribers by 2010, or about 9% of broadband market share. In the Netherlands, where several large-scale fibre deployments are ongoing, Idate also expects fibre to make up a relatively small percentage of the market, 4%, with 226,000 connected households. Sweden is the exception in Europe, with 15% of broadband connections based on fibre today, according to Idate. By 2010, FTTx will constitute 30% of broadband connections in the country, says the research firm.
