摘要

A new set of quality-of-service (QoS) specifications for next-generation networks from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) could ease the tension between operators and their Internet-based competitors. The new QoS protocols from the standardisation body's ITU-T Study Group 11 are aimed at enabling operators to manage the quality of their next-generation on-net services such as IPTV. Internet companies, meanwhile, currently have no way of guaranteeing the end-user experience. It is expected that in the battle over customers between the two sides, quality of service will be more important than price, and the ability for operators to manage their QoS gives them a huge advantage in that respect. The new protocols will, however, make it easier for operators and Internet-based service providers to reach agreements whereby operators guarantee an enhanced QoS in exchange for a share of the Internet-based provider's revenues.
