Fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) aims to be an essential application for us all, offering the benefits of the fixed line on the mobile phone. But has FMC had the success it originally set out to achieve? The purpose of FMC is to marry the convenience of the mobile with the high quality and speed of fixed-line communications. FMC joins together mobile, VoIP calls and Wi-Fi in one simple package by enabling users to make calls on their mobile phone at a reduced rate in the vicinity of their "home base station". This home base station acts as the link between the handset and the outside world, routing calls through a landline or a broadband connection rather than using a mobile network.
