Belgacom has followed Vodafone to become the second European telecoms operator to launch an island in virtual-reality universe Second Life. The Belgian incumbent quietly gave the public access to Belgacom Island last month after opening its doors on May 18. The operator is still experimenting, but it expects to use the venue for training and e-learning, hosting events and product launches, and as a sales portal for its real-world offers. The island, which can be explored on foot by avatars, or virtual characters, is divided into four zones representing each segment of Belgacom's quadruple-play offering - television, mobile, Internet and fixed telephony - and has a central office with a rooftop auditorium.
