Potential bids by Sprint and AT&T for the assets of alternative carrier KPNQwest, which will be sold off imminently, are part of a wider strategy by the US incumbents to move into the European market. The telecoms giants are in particular targeting the business of large US multinationals with European interests and, increasingly, European multinationals. The linchpin of Sprint's strategy to consolidate a European presence has so far been the acquisition in the past month of a network from Telia International Carrier (TIC) covering 11 European cities. The operator is understood to be looking for dark fibre in other financial centres. AT&T, meanwhile, has begun a marketing push in Europe and is spending $300 million on upgrading its existing network to around 39 European cities by the third quarter of 2002.
