Lucent: Attacking the Cable Market Through Services

Lucent Technologies is building on its cable strategy, but don't expect the vendor to run out and buy a CMTS (cable modem termination system) vendor anytime soon. "We've had our chances to do that and passed on all of them," says Dave Dial, vice president of cable business development for Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS). "We'll have a big play in cable, but it will primarily be by leveraging our services capabilities." As MSOs look to offer the complete triple play of voice, video and data, they face huge challenges, Dial says. "Opex as a percentage of revenues is high for MSOs," Dial says. "They've built state-of-the-art networks, but now the battle is to build revenue streams. It complicates a network tremendously to add voice and broadband services and because of this, our services message has great appeal."
