Escalating broadband usage, economic drivers and enabling technologies facilitates the use of IP as the foundation for high-quality voice, streaming audio and video, online gaming, wireless, and other applications. However, IP networks to date have had mixed success in supporting mission-critical applications, which demand greater levels of stability and reliability (see Figure 1). Carriers also recognize they cannot continue supporting multiple networks: one network for voice, one for IP traffic, one for ATM or even frame relay-based services, one for wireless, etc. Most carriers envision a converged new generation network where voice, data, video and wireless services are supported over a single reliable and cost-effective network. Their financial success and competitiveness depends on achieving both the high margins from rich new services and the cost efficiencies of migrating multiple networks to a converged IP core (see Figure 2). The big question, however, is how they will get there in as non-disruptive a manner as possible. This requires upgrading their existing best-effort IP network to support all types of services.
