As Wall Street will be the first to tell you, now is a great time to be an investor or venture capitalist in the telecom industry. The value of Internet stocks is through the roof, as stock prices for companies that have recently undergone an Initial Public Offering (IPO) have shown. Take for example eBay and uBid, which have experienced a 1550-percent and 695-percent gain, respectively. Internet opportunities pushed total venture capital investment for 1998 up to $13.7 billion, with nearly a third directed at software companies—most of which are offering Internet-centric products. Investment growth in Internet technologies looks strong for the immediate future as well, as the United States slips into a high-tech investment fever.
