Several years ago (it seems as if in another lifetime), I covered the development of the Advanced Technology Demonstration Network (ATDN). Funded largely by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the ATDN had an astonishing speed of 2.5 Gbps OC-48, which perhaps made it the fastest network in existence. Only a handful of government agencies involved in high-end research were given the privilege to connect to the ATDN, a testbed for the then-emerging ATM and SONET technologies. It looked to me like this kind of precious bandwidth was overkill, obviously not something for the masses, and affordable only because a few government agencies had been given big research bucks to play around with.
