As expected, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, Inc., were the big winners in the FCC's 700 megahertz band auction, which closed March 18, securing the largest C-block licenses and nearly a third of the B block, respectively, and accounting for $16 billion of the record $19.6 billion in gross bids - or about 82% of the total. Subtracting the failed $472 million bid for the D block, the auction grossed $19.1 billion (and netted nearly $19 million after bidding credits). Verizon Wireless bid $9.36 billion and AT&T bid $6.63 billion to win 71 % of the total spectrum being auctioned.
