Adelphia Communications Corp., capping off an auction process for the company's assets that stemmed from the cable service provider's financial collapse in 2002, has agreed to be purchased by cable giants Time Warner, Inc., and Comcast Corp. in a deal that will pay Adelphia's creditors $17.7 billion, including $12.7 billion in cash and a 16% equity stake in Time Warner Cable, Inc. The complex series of transactions, which includes asset swaps between Time Warner Cable and Comcast, will leave Time Warner owning most of Adelphia's assets. But Comcast will also gain subscribers and will be able to unwind its 17.9% equity stake in Time Warner Cable and its 4.7% interest in Time Warner Entertainment L.P. Both investments are now held in FCC-mandated trusts.
