On 1 April the formidable Dame Patricia Hodgson, who was once fancied to succeed John Birt as director-general of the BBC in 2000, will finally come into her own, as chairman of the powerful communications and media industry regulator, Ofcom. After four decades of high achievement in broadcasting and in public life (see box), this consummate operator was handed the glittering prize. She was confirmed in the post by culture secretary Maria Miller on 18 December, following a light grilling by MPs on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee. She is succeeding another powerful woman, economist Colette Bowe, who decided not to reapply - running Ofcom is a heavy commitment.
