摘要

Stop living in the past. Television is getting better, argues Huw Wheldon lecturer Peter Bazalgette, creative director, Endemol Entertainment UK. Today's medium offers more choice and is more in touch with the audience than ever before. Ghastly, cynical, dissipated... that was just what they said about Big Brother 1. Opposition to Big Brother 2 managed to unite the Daily Telegraph with the likes of Gemaine Greer and Salman Rushdie. How illiberal our favourite liberals have become. But my purpose is not to defend Big Brother. Instead - coming from the company which produces the show, I want to explore what it tells us about how television is developing. What is it about Big Brother and what lies beyond? I'm first going to talk about how powerful it can be to harness many different media at the same time. And then I want to examine how profoundly our relationship with television is changing. And how wrong the moaners and groaners are who attack today's programmes -there was no golden age of television. Finally, though, I'm going to ring a warning bell about the schedules of the future.
