Tv fiction like ER and EastEnders can be more valuable than documentaries when it comes to conveying difficult messages about health problems. Once upon a time there was the documentary -objective, true, serious and rooted in real life. The informational form par excellence, documentaries opened the proverbial window on the world for viewers to cast their gaze. Fiction, on the other hand, was subjective, trivial, a make-believe spectacle aimed at entertaining audiences and allowing them to escape from their daily problems. Soap operas had a particularly bad press, stigmatised as the lowest common denominator and for feeding bored housewives a diet of emotional excess via relationships and romance.
