Alastair Burnet was the first newscaster of ITN's News at Ten in 1967 and alongside him as co-presenter was the late Andrew Gardner. Alastair joined ITN as Political Editor in 1963, when ITN's longest news bulletin was 14 minutes. It was a heady time for political journalism; Sir Alec Douglas Home had just replaced Harold Macmil-lan as Prime Minister and everyone knew that there would soon be a General Election. Burnet was assigned by Geoffrey Cox as the anchorman for ITN's election night programme — only the second time that Independent Television had broadcast a General Election.
