William G Stewart started his television career in 1958 at the BBC after brief spells as a serviceman in Kenya and as a Butlin's Redcoat. By 1964, he had climbed the ranks from prop man to call-boy to assistant floor manager to floor manager. Then Eric Sykes recommended to the head of comedy, Frank Muir, that Stewart should go on a BBC television directors course; he did and became the director of the Sykes series.
