摘要

In recent years, Wildland firefighting awareness has gone drastically up because of the press coverage of the recent wildland fire outbreak. In the past five years, there has been an average of 74,328 wildland fires in the US affecting 6,534,916.6 acres of land. The people who risk their life to fight wildfires are called wildland firefighters. Their main goal is fire suppression, which starts with the discovery of the wildfires and lasts until it is completely extinguished. They also operate heavy equipment called Pulaski, Chainsaws, and Bulldozers to create a boundary so that oncoming fires cannot cross their intended paths. They also set backfires sometimes to consume potential fuels that are in their path or to change the direction of the fire. Wildland firefighters operate for long periods (8-16 hours/ day) and are generally exposed to a radiant heat flux of 1-8 kW/ m~2. In extreme fire conditions, they may be exposed to higher radiant heat fluxes, around 80 kW/m~2 for a short span of time. The wildland fires take place often in the forest or bush. They are less likely to experience the extreme exposure to heat that other fire-fighters operating in a closed space experience. However, they are exposed to other risks, which involve a wide range of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from the smoke. The incomplete combustion of natural material may produce carbon monoxide (CO). Exposure to both PAH and CO can be fatal in many instances.
