Quality, more than preferential tariff, is critical to trade growth. That certainly is the experience of Sri Lanka's garment industry which received an unexpected commendation recently from a very satisfied customer. The Russian ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alexander Karechav, addressing the annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association (SLAEA) as chief guest showed to his audience a Sri Lanka-made shirt that was bought 44 years ago. It looked as new as when it was bought for his wedding.
