Can sustainable fashion make successful business? A number of fashion industry experts assembled at a one-day forum which the non-governmental organisation Redress organised in Hong Kong on January 20 to discuss this very issue. This was the second such gathering that Redress organised; the first was in last January. The assembled experts shared their experience and observations in the field of sustainable and ethical fashion; but their audience were left with no clear-cut answer to the question. The concept - up-cycling textile waste and discarded clothing - is indeed eco-friendly as it will reduce the use of energy and water. For example, it was said that if everybody purchased just one item made from recycled wool a year, it would save some 371 million gallons of water and 480 tons of chemical dyes. That means a lot for a world which will have to support a population of some 10 billion by 2050.
