When textile reinforced composites are needed for structural application, 2D laminates stacked in layers are often the preferred choice. The reason is, they possess better in-plane strength and stiffness properties than metals or ceramics. At the same time, in some critical structures like aircraft and automobiles, the application of 2D laminates are restricted due to their inferior resistance against impact damages and low through thickness mechanical properties compared with traditionally used aluminium alloys and steel1. The stacked layers of 2D laminates in the composite areal so prone to delamination due to the lack of third direction reinforcement. Figure-1 shows an example of delamination in an F-4 Phantom Ⅱ where the epoxy glues had deteriorated. Edson et aPidentified delamination failures under compres-sive load thatweremainly located inside the composite laminate as shown in the next part of the figure.
