The message emerging from the two-day fibres conference that the PCI Consulting Group of Britain, held in Hong Kong on Nov 7 and 8, was that China plays a dominant role in the fibres market. In opening the conference, the co-founder of the PCI Consulting Group, Peter Driscoll, presented a comprehensive review of the global fibre situation. Textile mill consumption of wool, cotton, cellulosic and synthetics worldwide has increased by an average of 3.6% during 2000-12 to reach 80.8 million tons. Consumption in 2013 is estimated to have reached 84.1 million tons and is expected to rise to 87.6 million tons this year. By region, China's share of world textile mill consumption has expanded rapidly in recent decades. It represented about 20% in 1980, and now 50%.
