Apparel imports by the United States increased 5.7% in quantity and pushed the import value up by 3% in the first half of this year compared with the previous corresponding period. Import quantity increased from 11.981 billion to 12.664 billion pieces of garment. However, import value showed some potential signs of slowing or downward pressure on prices. Second quarter imports were only 0.1% above second quarter 2012 levels, compared with first quarter imports which was 2.9% higher than the 2012 first quarter. The quantity imported, during the second quarter, at 12.664 billion pieces, was 2.5% higher than the first quarter of 2013 and 3.8% higher than the second quarter of 2012.
