The recent global economic and financial crisis that inflicted awesome havoc upon the United States has also done something good at least on the trade front for both the US and Asia. An analytical report that the International Trade Commission (ITC) of the United States released on the shifts in US merchandise trade in 2009 shows that the US trade deficit last year reduced by $308.2 billion or 33.5% to $612.4 billion (Table-3) as domestic economic difficulties forced imports down by 25.9% to $1,549.2 billion (Table-2).
