The launching of the open international trading system at the begin ning of 2005 had evoked mixed reaction in India's textile and clothing sector. Some believed the system would help the sector to seize new opportunities, increase competitiveness and energise itself for stronger growth. Others feared that the textile and clothing sector would find it difficult to survive, let alone grow, in the new competitive environment.rnNow, looking over the record of performance in the past more than five years, the optimists feel vindicated and the pessimists heave a sigh of relief because the sector has indeed met the challenges of the globalised economy and also withstood the recent recession that caused havoc in India's export markets as well as rising competition from lower cost rivals like China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc., some of which also enjoying preferential access to major markets.
