In its efforts to increase exports and bring down the present high rate of unemployment, the US is eyeing Southeast Asia as an attractive partner that can provide some comfort. Last month, the US president, Barack Obama, met the leaders of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) at the US-Asean leaders meeting in New York. Speaking at the opening of this meeting on September 24, Mr Obama was frank about Southeast Asia's significance to solving America's woes. "Southeast Asia will be important to reaching my goal of doubling American exports," he told his Asean counterparts.
