Australian sheep farmers suffer huge losses annually due to fly strike on their livestock. Mulesing has for decades been the only effective means to prevent fly strike. A loud brouhaha has been brewing over this procedure for some time with extreme animal campaigners like PETA demanding termination of mulesing, no matter what. Mulesing, a surgical procedure for removing strips of wool-bearing skin from around the breech and tail of lambs to prevent fly strike was developed in the 1930s by John Mules. Fly strike or blowfly strike is a common problem for sheep, especially in parts of the world where there are hot and wet weather conditions.
