Cotton growers in Pakistan might be able to plant BT cotton starting next year under an ordinance that President Asif Ali Zardari will shortly promulgate, says the country's textile minister, Muhammad Farooq Saeed Khan who had also assured a cotton farmers' delegation that all problems related to cotton production will be addressed through enforcement of the standards laid down in the Cotton Control Act and Cotton Standardisation Ordinance. As a sign of the government's plan to move decidedly in increasing cotton production and expanding the textile industry as a whole, a Cabinet committee has already been formed and an allocation of 42 billion rupees (over $508 million) has been provided in the current budget for textile trade promotion.
