The news that DyStar has filed for insolvency in Frankfurt on September 29 came as a surprise for many. DyStar is after all the leading global producer of dyes for the textile and leather processing industries, and comes from a 144-year history of textile dyes research and production with Bayer, Hoechst and BASF. Bayer and Hoechst merged their textile dyestuff operations to form DyStar in 1995 (see A star is born, Editor's Page Textile Asia July 1995), with BASF following suit in 2000.
