These adversities could not however dislodge the global industrial giant from its lead position.rnThe ripple effect spreading from the economic crisis that started in the United States and infected other developed economies has taken its toll on the 2008 performance of the Switzerland-based global industrial group Rieter. However, both divisions of the company-Textile Systems and Automotive Systems-continued to retain their lead on the world market. And looking forward, the chairman of the company's board of directors, Erwin Stoller, and its CEO Hartmut Reuter say that while the global economic downturn will run its course, Rieter will continue to work on innovations in order to "exploit its strong market position in the next cyclical upswing and expand it further with attractive products."rnIn their annual report to shareholders for the 2009 annual general meeting scheduled to take place in Winterthur, Switzerland, on April 29, the two top leaders of the company said, the year 2007 was a record period for the Textile Systems. However, as the world slipped deeper into recession in 2008, orders for staple fibre machinery declined to a substantially low level. The 539.5 million Swiss franc worth of orders received by Textile Systems during the year were 68% lower than the 1,703.1 million worth of orders received in the record year of 2007. The decline, Mr Stoller and Mr Reuter say, was partly due to cancellations of orders placed in the previous year. Most orders, they point out in their report, "came from China, followed by smaller markets such as Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, South Korea and Brazil." However, these were "by no means able to compensate for the reduction in order intake from large markets such as India and Turkey."
