The specialty chemicals company LANXESS has declared that by 2012 its plants in Germany will reduce their greenhouse gas emitions by around 80% from their 2007 levels. Measured in so-called CO_2 equivalents, this would mean a reduction in emissions from around 1.9 million metric tons in 2007 to about 350,000 tons in 2012. To achieve this target, LANXESS, according to a company announcement, will enter into Germany's first industrial joint implementation project - an innovative instrument devised for carrying out climate protection projects. It was recently approved by the German Emissions Tradirig Authority of the Federal Environment Agency in Berlin. At the heart of this initiative is the construction of a second facility for re- ducing dinitrogen monoxide (N_2O)-also known as laughing gas - at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site. Dinitrogen monoxide is a by-product in the manufacture of adipic acid, a raw material for the production of plastics. The gas produced during this process is completely non-toxic but extremely harmful to the environment.
