Textiles and garments export in February fell by 2.7% to US$257million from $264 million in previous February. The overall trend was that overseas demand for woven garments made in Sri Lanka declined by 15% from $142 million in February 2007 to $121 million this February while market for knitted garment in that period expanded by 13% to $123 million. Exports to EU increased by $21 million to a total of $122 million while to the US fell by $38 million to just $111 million. On a cumulative basis, total textile and garment exports in the first two months of this year stood just $2 million ahead of its year-ago level of $487 million. Textile and garment exports during January-February 2008 accounted for 41% of total exports and 56% of industrial exports. Textile sector imports during the period increased by 17% to $267 million compared with $228 million during January-February 2007. Following the Free Trade Agreement reached with India, Sri Lanka's textile exports to that country started inching up. Last year, textile product exports to India were valued at US$20.1 million which represented 3.9% of the country's total exports to its northern neighbour. Two years ago, the share of textile products was only 1.38%. Two-way trade between Sri Lanka and India has expanded nearly six folds in the past nine years-from $557.30 million in 1999 to $3.26 billion last year-with the trade balance in favour of India, though the gap has reduced from ten-to-one to less than six-to-one.
