There is now hope that Indonesia's textile industry modernisation program can move forward. With Rp 240 billion provided for machinery upgrade and supporting activities in the current year's budget, the program was to start in January. It was however held up due to a procedural and legal hitch. The finance ministry refused to release the fund without a supporting legal basis. The concern of the ministry was that there was no precedence of the government funding an entirely private sector program. It thus became a legislative issue leading the House of Representatives to demand that the government either present a supporting piece of legislation for ratification or find the best possible way for releasing the fund already provided in the budget.
