The appreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar is hurting India's textile and apparel exports to the US. As per the US customs data, imports of textile and clothing items from India declined in general by 3.5%, from US$ 486 million in January 2006 to US$472m in January 2007. In specific areas, the decline has been even sharper-9% in the case of clothing with maximum value addition and 23% for man-made fiber products, which though small in total volume of exports have been very promising in terms of growth potential. Indian textile and garments exports to the US have been reporting steady growth since the abolition of quotas.
