My second editorial in this series is, as scheduled, devoted to Bayer AG, whose headquarters are at Leverkusen. Unlike BASF with its huge central administration building, which overlooks the whole of Ludwigshafen, Bayer in 1961, when I visited them, worked cheek by jowl with their community. Each time I go to Cologne I try to drop by to salute old friends. After the war they found themselves in the British Occupation Zone, which extended from Hanover and Wolfsburg to the Lower Rhine land. I chose this issue to feature Bayer, as its annual shareholders' meeting will be held on April 28 to present the results for Fiscal Year 2005. One highlight of this event concern the inauguration of the first stage of a major project to be undertaken by Bayer MaterialScience at Caojing near Shanghai. Let me revert to this topic later.
