Polylactide (PLA), a new synthetic polymer, has properties which could prove valuable in a wide array of applications. The dyeing behaviour of PLA is discussed. Poly lactic acid, also named polylactide (PLA), is one of three commonly used synthetic biodegradable aliphatic polyesters. PLA was first produced in 1932 by Carothers by direct condensation polymerization in solvents under high vacuum. Commercial applications of PLA was established in 1950s with PLA surgical sutures which were biodegradable and bioabsorbable. The development of lower cost processes for PLA production has since stimulated the use of PLA in a wide range of applications.
