The International dynamics of textile and clothing industries and competitive comparisons, paper presented to the Technical & Industrial Forum, 83rd Textile Institute World Congress, Shanghai, May 2004 The essential dynamic in the global textile and apparel in-dustries is their transformation from national into globally-integrated industries and markets. The process has been characterised by the migration of production from industrialised nations to developing countries. The most sensitive and mobile part of the production chain is the apparel segment, due to labour intensity and ease of relocating operations. Textile production has become highly automated and capital intensive. However the need for speed in the supply chain and buyer confidence has increasingly favoured location of textile activities closer to apparel manufacturing.
