To survive in an era of increasing global competition, many textile and clothing companies are developing specialised niche markets. What are the best means to this? - paper delivered to the 84th Textile Institute Annual World Conference, Raleigh, NC. With the elimination of quotas on January 1, 2005, the international textile and apparel industry faces many challenges; particularly an increase in competitive pressures. As with most industries, increased competition generally results in a deflation of prices due to overcapacity, besides to a reduction in the number of firms (Porter, 1998). In the global textile and apparel industry, those firms most likely to succeed are located in countries with an availability of raw materials, abundant inexpensive labour, flexible manufacturers and government policies conducive to manufacturing.
